The main character is comfortably well-off and cherishes his independence. But an absurd situation deprives him of free will. He loses the ability to continue his comfortable life and finds himself in a situation that is anathema to him. He becomes dependent on everyone around him – from the authorities to people he happens to meet – and realizes how helpless he is to affect his circumstances.
