In 1974, graduate student Sergei Gushchin is writing his dissertation on the “Defeat of the White Army in the Far East.” He becomes fascinated with the historical figure Baron von Ungern-Sternberg, who tried to establish a “middle empire” in the 1920s relying on the forces of the Mongols and Buryats, as well as the traditions of Mongolian lamas and Buryat shamans. To meet with a veteran of the Civil War, the hunter Gavril Obrubkov, who knew the Baron personally, Sergei travels to an elite hunting preserve near the village of Pustyr outside of Moscow. The young man has no inkling that he is about to go one-on-one with a monstrous and dangerous beast.
