Desperate poverty instigates him to a murder of an elderly pawnbroker. Restless perpetrator feverishly reflects on his deed and tries to find the meaning of life. However his theory of the “great man” falls apart.

Raskolnikov finds a twin soul Sonya Marmeladova who is compelled into prostitution to help her family. The sense of quilt overwhelms Raskolnikov and he confesses his crime. Raskolnikov gives up an idea of having been chosen and finds the support in love.
