Fatei Travels From the Far Side of the World

Proline Film’s “Fatei and the Sea” was Russia’s entry at the international documentary film forum BalticSeaDoc in Riga.

The forum supports projects from the countries of Eastern Europe, the Baltics and the CIS and pitches them to major European television channels and distributors, including ARTE (France-Germany), BBC (Great Britain), and YLE (Scandinavia). This is a great chance for this worthy Russian project to get some publicity on the European professional film market.

The film is the project of screenwriter Mila Kudryashova and director Alina Rudnitskaya, whose films have won many awards at international film festivals. And the producer is Andrei Sigle— whose films are always appreciated by true film-lovers.

The action in the film takes place in the Far East on Rikord Island — on the other side of the world, where Russia begins. The marine farmer Fatei wants to continue doing what he loves: growing marine culture at the bottom of the sea, work that benefits his home town. In Vladivostok they call him the Hermit, and although Fatei can handle the elements of nature, he has a much harder time with the elements of human nature. Here the battle is life or death. Poachers threaten the farmer and his family while the authorities look on and do nothing. In order to protect his business and his dream, Fatei often has to go outside the law.

This is a film about the strength of the human spirit and a dream that becomes a lodestar. It’s also a film about the propensity of Russians to go against common sense for the greater good. It’s no wonder that the film has the support of world hockey legend Vyacheslav Fetisov, who knows what it is to fight through pain, and what it is to have a dream that cannot be betrayed. It was Fetisov who introduced Fatei and his family to the filmmakers.

Right now negotiations are underway with several potential foreign partners, including the Finnish film studio ILLUME. Thanks to an invitation by the Finnish studio, another fearless professional may join the film team —Teemu Liakka, an underwater cameraman who has shot many major European pictures and who goes where others don’t dare.

The distinguished and passionate film makers for “Fatei and the Sea” believe in the film and know that it will be a success.
